March 19, 2010 - The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) announced today that it will distribute in Haiti seeds donated by the Brazilian government.
On Friday arrived in Port-au-Prince the first shipment from a total of 72 tonnes of seeds of maize and beans, which will be distributed among small farmers.
The Acting Coordinator of the WFP for Emergencies Javier Escobedo, stressed the importance of receiving these seeds, since shortly after the earthquake all seeds were consumed in the country due to lack of food.
He added that the seeds of maize and beans are essential to ensure the success of the planting season which began this month and ends in May.
In the coming months, WFP and the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture plans to distribute more than 1,500 tons of seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural inputs among farmers affected by the earthquake of January 12.
